Best Hydration Drink for Pregnancy and Labor

Hydration is key throughout pregnancy! Even being slightly dehydrated can be a strain on the pregnant body. It is important to know that dehydration is the #1 cause of preterm activity.

Hydration increases blood flow to the placenta: Help the placenta fuel the baby’s growth and development and also bolster amniotic fluid.  TIP: Make sure to hydrate in the hours before each ultrasound!

Hydration stabilizes blood sugar: keeps levels steady and avoid spikes; this may help manage pregnancy nausea

 HYDRATION TIPS

GOOD: Aim to drink 2 liters a day, ideally in small amounts spread throughout the day.

 BETTER:

  • Drink your water from glass or metal containers (avoid plastic)
    • Phthalates in plastic migrate into water, especially when plastic changes temperature, and phthalates are no friend to your baby’s or your body’s endocrine health
  • Drink water with electrolytes! Try these ideas:
    • Homemade: a pinch of sea salt and a squeeze of lime
    • For purchase: my favorite is TriOral (you just need a pinch!)

 BEST:

  • Add in:
    • pinch of cal/mag (calcium and magnesium) powder, such as CALM brand
    • squirt of liquid chlorophyll
    • winter: liquid zinc
